Middle & High School Education Programs

Bio-Waves, Inc. supports educational efforts for middle and high school students through several avenues. We develop computer-based workshops that focus on marine and environmental topics, and provide opportunities for students to obtain experience with passive acoustic monitoring equipment and procedures. Workshops and events are developed on an as-requested basis and are designed to along with the requested topic and content. Examples of previous programs include:

  • GIS Workshop for Biologists: In a week long summer academy, high school students developed experience with data collection using hand-held GPS units and subsequently learned how to map and analyze their data using ArcGIS. The week culminated in students creating a short presentation including a map of data collected during their research that week.

  • Marine Mammal Bioacoustic Workshop: Middle school students were introduced to the world of marine mammal bioacoustics through a day long computer-based workshop. They were introduced to sounds through the acoustic program Ishmael to learn about how marine mammal bioacoustic research is conducted.

  • Passive Acoustic Monitoring Field Excursion: Bio-Waves joined the Drew School’s ship-based learning effort in San Francisco for a day of hands-on opportunities with acoustic equipment. Students learned how to deploy and retrieve equipment as well as how to monitor acoustic data in real time.
