Irrawaddy Dolphin Conservation
Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve, Vietnam
We are collaborating with researchers in Vietnam who are assessing the occurrence of endangered Irrawaddy dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris) in the Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve, Vietnam. This UNESCO designated reserve is an area where intense fishing activities occur, resulting in by-catch of Irrawaddy dolphins and other species of marine mammals. We are assisting this important conservation project by providing new technologies such as our recently developed microMARS and SonarPoint autonomous recording systems. We are also providing advice and expertise on the study design and data analysis. The Kien Gang Biosphere was recently designated. Other organizations working on this project include the Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling (CREEM) of the University of St. Andrews, and the Department of Geography and Environment from San Francisco State University.
