Matteo Bernasconi

Dr. Matteo Bernasconi started his career as a deckhand in 1998. He is now a registered USCG Captain. Matteo studied Nature Management and Conservation at the University of Pavia, Italy, where he graduated in 2002 with a thesis on the vocal activity of the fin whales in the Mediterranean Sea. In 2005 he started cooperating with the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen, Norway, working hundreds of hours at sea on modern commercial fishery and research vessels surveying the North Atlantic. Here he developed his Ph.D. project. He graduated in 2012 at the University of St Andrews, Scotland (UK). His dissertation involved investigating the potential of using active acoustics as a tool to localize and study cetacean behaviors in the wild.

Matteo has since then participated in many projects related to his area of expertise in sonar technologies. It is noteworthy his participation in the 2016-17 Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition known as ACE. He has been working for Bio-waves Inc. part-time since 2018 when he assisted with the PRISMM project.

Matteo’s personal interests include diving, electronics, good food in general, wildlife photography, and of course naval science and navigation. Although he is not a giant, he played in the Italian first division of American Football (1995-2005) and subsequently coached for a couple of years afterward.
