Our mission is to provide scientifically based, cost-effective solutions to address complex issue affecting living marine resources in the marine environment. To achieve this, we use the best available scientific methods and technologies. If these are not available, we develop them. Our focus is on advancing the field of marine bioacoustics and related technologies to improve the management and conservation of marine mammals and other living marine resources.
Who We Are
Bio-Waves Inc. is a small business consisting of scientists, engineers, marine biologists, and educators who conduct research, provide monitoring and mitigation services, and develop new hardware and software technologies. The company was founded in 2006 by Tom Norris and a small group of like-minded marine scientists who are passionate about addressing issues related to marine mammal biology bioacoustics and conservation.
What We Do
Our work focusses primarily on bio-acoustics research and monitoring of marine marine mammals. To do this, we develop and improve passive acoustic monitoring hardware such as towed hydrophone arrays and autonomous recorder systems. In addition, we develop algorithms and software for acoustic data-processing and analysis. Finally, we provide educational programs, professional training workshops, and public outreach through our education department. We pride ourselves on providing cost-effective scientifically based solutions for our clients in the government, academic, non-profit, and private sectors.
Who We Work For and With
We work for a variety of sponsors and clients including government agencies such as the U.S. Navy, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and Canada Fisheries and Oceans (CFO). We also work for private research initiatives such as the Sound and Marine Life Programme which is sponsored by the International Oil and Gas Producers Association (IOGP). We work for private companies in the United States (e.g. Tetra-Tech, Mantech, AECOM) and internationally (e.g. LGL Ltd Canada, SocioAmbiental Brazil). We partner with a academic institutes, such as UCSD’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of St. Andrews. In addition, we partner with non-profit research institutes such as the Marine Mammal Foundation, Oceanwide Sciences and Cetos Research Organization.
